First Place’s “Stay Paid” Month: Highlights Across California

At First Place for Youth, March was all about celebrating young people’s growth and grit in their career journeys across California. Through our annual Stay Paid Month initiative, each region hosted unique events designed to inspire, educate, and empower youth as they build toward long-term career success. From hands-on workshops to career pathway explorations, here’s a look at how some of our counties brought this vision to life:

In Oakland, youth gathered for an innovative, hands-on resume workshop led by our Employment and Education team. Participants learned how to use AI tools like ChatGPT to identify and fix resume errors, craft compelling content, and boost their confidence in the job hunt. First Place’s very own HR recruiter offered expert insights on what hiring managers look for, even walking youth through the application process in real time. Everyone left with a high-quality, printed resume in hand—ready to take the next step in their career path.

Our Santa Clara County office hosted a Career Exploration tabling event where youth connected directly with local career development programs. Partners like NPower, the Santa Clara C.E.F.Y. Program, MidPen Housing, and the Trades Orientation Program shared valuable resources and employment pathways. The event also featured one of our participants who presented their non-profit, Community Cycles!

And in Los Angeles County, our youth stepped into the creative world with an exclusive Getty Museum tour hosted by Art + Practice. They explored career opportunities in the arts and engaged in an archival workshop with the Getty Research Institute. The event offered a rare look into the professional side of art and culture, helping youth imagine new possibilities for their futures.

Stay Paid Month is a celebration of our youth’s determination, talents, and potential. From resume workshops to hands-on career exploration, we’re excited to continue supporting youth across our programs as they grow into the professionals and leaders they’re meant to be.
