Expanding Housing Navigation Support for Foster Youth

At First Place for Youth, we’re committed to ensuring that young people transitioning out of foster care have the support they need to thrive as independent adults. Our Housing Navigation & Maintenance Program in Solano County is a shining example of how we’re making a difference in the lives of former foster youth, and we’re excited about the potential to expand this vital service to all the counties where we operate.

The Housing Navigation & Maintenance Program

Our program in Solano County offers a lifeline to former foster youth aged 18-25 who are county dependents and meet eligibility requirements. Through this initiative, we provide:

  • Light-touch case management
  • Support in finding and securing suitable housing
  • Guidance on maintaining stable housing
  • Connections to community resources
  • Assistance with educational and employment goals

The program runs for three years, including light case management for the duration of that period. This extended support is crucial in helping young adults maintain stability and work towards their long-term goals.

Key Benefits for Youth and Landlords

The Housing Navigation & Maintenance Program offers numerous benefits to both the youth we serve and the landlords who participate:

For Youth:

  • A stable place to call home
  • Support in developing essential life skills
  • Assistance in pursuing education and employment opportunities
  • Guidance in becoming responsible residents and community members

For Landlords:

  • Reduced unit turnover
  • Support from our Housing Navigator
  • Annual HUD inspections to ensure quality standards
  • Financial protection through the Housing Choice Voucher program

Looking to the Future

The success of our Solano County program has inspired us to look towards expanding this model across all the counties where First Place for Youth operates. By bringing housing navigation services to more areas, we can:

  1. Reach more former foster youth in need of housing support
  1. Create stronger partnerships with local housing authorities and landlords
  1. Enhance coordination within child welfare systems and Homeless Continuums of Care
  1. Provide targeted outreach to youth with the most severe needs

Join Us in Making a Difference

As we work towards expanding our Housing Navigation & Maintenance Program, we invite you to join us in supporting former foster youth. Whether you’re a potential landlord, a community partner, or someone passionate about making a difference, there are many ways to get involved.

Together, we can ensure that more young people transitioning out of foster care have the support they need to secure stable housing, pursue their goals, and build successful, independent lives. By expanding our housing navigation work, we’re not just providing a roof over their heads – we’re offering a foundation for their futures.
