First Place For Youth
Oct 22, 2024
This month, our team and youth attended the A+P Roundtable at the Universal College of Beauty, where they had the chance to explore career opportunities in cosmetology, esthetics, and barbering. It was a great opportunity for the 13 youth in attendance to connect with professionals in the field and learn more about the certification process, financial aid, and career pathways.
The roundtable was held inside the Universal College of Beauty, a historic institution located just steps away from the A+P Art Gallery in the vibrant Leimert Park neighborhood. Founded in 1930 by Mrs. Hazel D. Williams, after she was denied entry into beauty schools due to racial discrimination, the college holds the distinction of being the first in the West to address the specific hair care needs of African Americans. Five generations later, Mrs. Williams’ family continues to run this trailblazing school, making it a cornerstone of the community.
During the roundtable, participants heard from the school’s senior instructor, financial aid advisor, and president. They learned about the requirements for enrolling, the structure of the programs, the available financial aid, and the various career pathways that certification from this esteemed institution can unlock.
At First Place for Youth, we are committed to helping transition-age foster youth explore and achieve their career aspirations, and events like this roundtable are invaluable. It’s always inspiring to connect our youth with meaningful opportunities while fostering a sense of community with historic institutions like Universal College of Beauty. A big thank you to Paul and the A+P team for facilitating the event, the staff at Universal College of Beauty for sharing their expertise, and First Place’s Education and Employment Specialists and Youth Advocates who helped make this day possible!
