Mid-Summer Highlights from Across California

Every summer, First Place for Youth teams across California bring energy, creativity, and connection to our annual Summer Bridge program. Designed to keep youth engaged during the summer months, the program features a wide range of events that help young people build new skills, explore career paths, and strengthen their sense of community. Here’s a look at some of the highlights so far from across our counties:

Los Angeles County

In Los Angeles, youth have been connecting, celebrating, and having fun in meaningful ways. Our LA team recently hosted a Wall of Fame Celebration & Ice Cream Social, creating a festive space for youth to reflect on their growth and accomplishments. The event featured thoughtful presentations, decorations, and music aimed at celebrating youth progress while fostering deeper connections between peers and staff.

More recently, our LA team brought the fun outdoors with a spirited Summer Olympics Day. Youth showed up ready to compete in classic games like the spoon-and-egg relay, sack race, and basketball shootout. Between the high-energy relays and relaxing art activities, the day was filled with laughter, teamwork, and community building.

Alameda & San Francisco Counties

In AC/SF counties, our team hosted a successful Interview Preparation Workshop where 14 youth participated in a dynamic, hands-on session focused on professional development. The event covered everything from researching job opportunities to practicing mock interviews, complete with real-time feedback from staff. It was a powerful example of our youth stepping into their potential with confidence and support.

AC/SF staff and youth also took to the outdoors with a scenic hike through the Redwoods, paired with picnic treats and creative arts activities. The event provided a meaningful way for youth to recharge, connect with nature, and enjoy each other’s company.

Santa Clara County

In Santa Clara County, summer started strong with a Wall of Fame Celebration at the beautiful San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. Youth, mentors, and staff came together to recognize achievements and share inspiring stories of growth in school, work, and life.

The SCC team also hosted a Mock Interview Workshop that gave youth a chance to strengthen their professional skills. With a smaller group, participants received one-on-one coaching, practiced answering interview questions, and received valuable feedback in a supportive environment.

With just a few weeks left in the Summer Bridge program, we’re excited to continue sharing more updates from across CA. Whether it’s building job-readiness skills, celebrating milestones, or simply creating space for joy and connection, Summer Bridge continues to be a meaningful experience for our youth and staff alike!

Stay tuned for more highlights as we wrap up another unforgettable summer with our Annual Back-to-School Drive!
