“Aging Out” Explained: Our Conversation on Comfort Cases: UnPacked

What happens when a young person turns 18 and the system responsible for them expects them to figure out adulthood on their own?

Eddie Sumlin, Career Coach at First Place for Youth, and Kynya, a young person in our My First Place program, recently joined Comfort Cases: UnPacked, to talk about what “aging out” of foster care really looks like.

In this episode, they discuss:

  • What “aging out” actually means for young people
  • Why higher education can remain out of reach for so many foster youth
  • The difference between expecting an 18-year-old to be independent and giving them the tools to succeed

The takeaway: Young people leaving foster care don’t need lower expectations. They need the same support, opportunities, and people in their corner that every young person deserves.
