The Power of Storytelling in Foster Care

The stories we tell about young people in foster care shape how they are perceived, understood, and ultimately supported. Too often, narratives focus on challenges alone, overlooking the resilience, potential, and strengths of the young people behind the statistics.

In a recent masterclass, leaders from across industries came together to discuss the role of storytelling in creating more accurate and responsible representations of young people with foster care experience. The conversation explored how thoughtful, authentic narratives can help challenge misconceptions, elevate lived experiences, and inspire more effective support systems.

First Place for Youth is proud to be part of this important dialogue. Our CEO, Thomas Lee, contributed insights on the importance of advancing stories that center dignity, opportunity, and the voices of young people themselves. By sharing more authentic perspectives, we can help foster greater understanding and build stronger pathways to success for youth transitioning out of foster care.
